about

somewhere in between.

  • between busy and calm
  • between modern and historic
  • between digital and analog

where the name comes from

wallabout design is named for Wallabout Bay, the inlet on Brooklyn’s East River shore that became the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The name comes from the Dutch Waal bocht, “Walloons’ Bend”, after the French-speaking settlers who bought land there in the early 1630s. Much of our original inspiration comes from that corner of Brooklyn, a place that sits on the edge of many opposites: busy and calm, modern and historic, industrial and lived in.

why we work in the in-between

We like working at the edge of those pairs. A website should feel calm even when the business behind it is busy. A new room can carry an old building forward. The same goes for digital and analog: what you use online and what you live with are parts of one life, and we design them to fit together.

why tungsten

The W in our logo is tungsten, element 74, the hardiest metal on the table. It is stronger than gold and bright enough to light a room: for more than a century it has been the filament inside the bulb. The 74 and 183.84 on the tile are its atomic number and weight. That is the standard we hold ourselves to: strong without showing off, useful every day, still glowing when the heat is on.
